Accessing Alpha Brainwave State

Understanding our brainwave states is key to being able to hack ourselves for a particular state/outcome. In this Consciousness Hacking post we focus on hacks that shift our state from Beta to to Alpha. For an overview of all states, check out 5 Brainwave States You Need to Know

Beta Waves: 13 to 32 Hz are the most common daytime brain waves, with a rhythm of 13 to 32 Hz. They are dominant in normal wakeful states, when you’re focused on cognitive tasks, multi-tasking. They are associated with an active mind and excessive thinking. In excess, high beta brainwaves can create a sense of fragmented attention, stress, anxiety and overwhelm. We feel busy but we get very little done. 

Alpha Waves: 8 to 12 Hz. Harnessing your brain’s alpha waves can help you enter a flow state, which allows you to do deep work with less effort. Alpha waves induce feelings of calm, increase creativity, and enhance your ability to absorb new information. Typically linked to problem solving, insight, flow state, time distortion… alpha waves come with increased sense of focus, high output and high quality of work.

Insight or new ideas are often preceded by alpha brain waves, leading to spikes in gamma frequency. You may have heard people say that they have their best ideas in the shower, on the toilet, exercising. These activities most often increase the propensity of alpha waves. 

Interestingly the Schumann frequency or the Earth’s predominant frequency is 7.83hz, which sits between alpha and theta. In modern society, much of the Schumann frequency is blocked out by the massive amounts of EMF radiation that are emitted every minute of every day. A reason why many of us consciously or unconsciously seek out (or should) time in nature. Time surrounded by nature is a simple but effective consciousness hack.

Mantak Chia, master of the Tao, suggests that healthy DNA renewal needs arousal, orgasm, love, compassion and the Earth’s heartbeat. The two vital states, arousal, leading to orgasm, love and compassion are inextricably linked to love. This “love-vibration” creates a new chemistry and a new vibration. This “special” vibration is measured at a frequency of 8Hz. In short Alpha is love. Alpha/love renews. 

Whilst we continue to add to it, the following is a list of hacks for accessing Alpha (taken from our Becoming Exponential Program). The benefits of being able to access Alpha for health, wellbeing, productivity and performance are too many to ignore.

  3. Exercise
  4. Yoga
  5. Qigong / Tai Chi
  6. Immersion / appreciation of nature
  7. Camping 
  8. Hot (Sauna) and cold (Ice baths) therapy 
  9. Watching a good movie (not dual screening)
  10. Massage
  11. Float tanks
  12. Taking a bath/shower
  13. Dance
  14. Spending time with loved ones 
  15. Sex
  16. Self pleasure 
  17. Positive Prime
  18. Healy

  1. The list is probably endless and is global. Other possibilities: running (runners’ high), sweat lodges, drumming, tantra, childbirth (possibly due to the hyperventilating), chanting, and so much more. I would also add hallucinogens although these can also be dangerous.
