WHY ARE YOU HERE?
Finding our purpose can be really quite simple. It’s our ability to listen to the inner voice that guides us (our intuition/instinct) and having the courage to believe in it and act on it. We already know why we are here, it’s just that the mind (conditioned voices) and society are making too much noise and so we’ve forgotten how to listen to and trust the part of us that knows.
This is where pursuing our purpose gets complicated, because most of us have never been taught how to tune into our intuition, let alone follow it. We create our lives filtered by our emotional wounds and the projections of others – society, our teachers and parents. As such, we often find ourselves in unfulfilling life situations. We become trapped by our life circumstances – mortgages, debts, families, responsibilities. We become stuck, the emotional pain builds, despondency can set in and at times we find ourselves suffering. Can you relate?
I’ve been there, it’s horrible. The fortunate/unfortunate reality is that life wants us to be living our purpose and it will keep making things uncomfortable until we do what is required to live it. Yes we can medicate ourselves, mask the pain and in the short term that can feel easier, but it’s not in the long term.
We need to learn how to trust ourselves again… and so as we talk about purpose, we’re also talking about developing our intuition, our gut instinct. Whilst there is part of us that already knows what our “why” is, we can’t think our way to it or be told what it is. We need to connect with it.
What science shows us is that we can cultivate the states where this happens, we can measure it in the brain, it shows up in the alpha and theta brainwaves.
What are alpha and theta brainwaves? In short, our brain is an electrochemical organ. Electrical activity emanating from the brain is displayed in the form of brainwaves. Millions of electrical pulses pass between neurons when we work, exercise, relax and sleep. Brainwaves are grouped into frequency bands, each having specific characteristics associated with them. You can find a summary of the different brainwave states here, below is an overview of alpha / theta.
Alpha Waves: 8 to 12 Hz, alpha waves are involved in how we think, feel, communicate, sleep and generally function. Typically linked to problem solving, insight, flow state, time distortion, alpha waves come with increased sense of focus, and are associated with high output and high quality of work.
Note: Insight or new ideas are often preceded by the alpha brain wave state, leading to spikes in gamma frequency. You may have heard people say that they have their best ideas in the shower, on the toilet, exercising. These activities most often put us into an alpha state.
Theta Waves: 4 to 7 Hz, theta waves also occur during sleep, and have been observed in very deep states of meditation. It is seen in connection with creativity, intuition, daydreaming, healing, connection with the subconscious and visualisation. With a higher propensity of Theta brainwave the activity of the mind slows and is replaced by an internal stillness
Note: The Schumann frequency or the Earth’s frequency is 7.83hz, which sits between Theta and Alpha. In modern society, much of the Schumann frequency is blocked out by the massive amounts of EMF radiation that are emitted every minute of every day. A reason why many consciously or unconsciously spend time is nature. Time surrounded by nature is a simple but effective consciousness hack.
The high paced, hyper connected lives of our modern society take us out of these states and so we must learn to access them consciously. One of the more effective ways is practicing meditation. It is in focusing our attention that we can slow the brain waves. Taking our attention away from the noise the mind is making (thoughts, feelings) and bringing it to a central focal point. Meditation is a simple practice of focusing the mind, which in doing so consciously brings us into alpha and theta and consequently enables us to connect with our inner voice, without the noise of the mind and society.
